NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey man who is a registered sex offender has been convicted on charges he used a webcam to expose himself to an undercover officer he thought was an underage girl.

The attorney general’s office said Thursday that a jury in state Superior Court in Morristown found Thomas W. Phillips guilty of attempting to endanger the welfare of a child and attempting to transmit obscene materials to a person under 18 years old.

The 34-year-old Morristown resident is a member of the U.S. Merchant Marine.

Authorities say he believed he was exposing himself to a 13-year-old girl who was actually an undercover detective.

Phillips was on probation from a prior conviction on similar charges. He could face up to five years in state prison at his Aug. 22 sentencing.
