PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Crews have razed the old Hughes County jail in Pierre.

KCCR radio reports that the demolition work took about six hours on Wednesday.

The jail opened in 1968 and closed in 2010 after a regional jail opened in the city. County Manager Kevin Hipple says the site of the old jail next to the County Courthouse will be left as green space for now, after debris is hauled away. That’s expected to take at least two weeks.
