PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Portland police say an officer investigating an assault on a bike and pedestrian path shot and killed a man who began swinging a crowbar when officers tried to question him.

Officers were called Thursday morning to the Springwater Corridor Trail in southeast Portland.

The police spokesman, Sgt. Pete Simpson, says two officers have been put on leave, standard procedure in police shootings.

He says officers talked to an assault victim and tried to talk to a suspect, who began swinging the crowbar. One officer fell while backing away, and one officer fired at the suspect. Simpson said which officer fired hasn’t been made public.

The path along an old train line is a camp spot for transients. It runs from the Willamette River through Gresham to Boring.
