SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a Sunland Park father who accidentally ran over his 3-year-old son, killing the boy, was trying to buy drugs at the time.

The El Paso Times reports (https://bit.ly/1v4YjzY) that 25-year-old Daniel Orozco was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death.

Sunland Park police say Orozco is accused of stopping to buy heroin and then leaving the scene without checking to see if the boy was in the vehicle.

Police say Orozco was aware his son knew how to unbuckle his seatbelt and get out of the car.

After hitting the boy, Orozco and another person drove to the police station to get help.

Authorities had the child airlifted to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It was not clear if Orozco had an attorney.
