ERIE, Pa. (AP) - A woman was sentenced to seven to 15 years in state prison for shooting her drunken boyfriend to death, and the judge said he took pleas for leniency from the victim’s mother into account in handing down a term at the lower end of the sentencing range.

Kristina Mae Allen, 29, shot Dean Haggerty, 27, during an argument in the couple’s mobile home in Summit Township. Authorities said his blood alcohol content was 3½ times the legal limit for drivers.

“Alcohol killed my son,” the victim’s mother, Angel Haggerty, said at Wednesday’s sentencing hearing, The Erie Times-News (https://bit.ly/SPwyNA ) reported. Allen, she said, “just pulled the trigger.”

Erie County Judge Shad Connelly said her comments moved him and agreed that the victim “was severely intoxicated.” He also cited Allen’s remorse and lack of a prior record.

Prosecutors had cited inconsistent statements by the defendant, saying she first told police that she shot Haggerty while trying to take the gun from him as he threatened to kill himself but later saying she pulled the trigger because she was upset that he had falsely accused her of infidelity.

Allen, who didn’t testify during the trial, wept as she apologized to the victim’s family.

“I pray every day that Dean somehow knows I never meant to hurt him,” she said.

Defense attorney Eric Mikovch had called the shooting an accident and sought a sentence of as little as one to 7½ years.

Assistant District Attorney Brandon Bingle sought a sentence in the standard range - 7 1/2 to 20 years - saying the defendant knowingly disregarded Haggerty’s life by pointing and firing a loaded gun at him.

“He might have been intoxicated, but she wasn’t,” Bingle said after the sentencing.
