ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Authorities are investigating a fire that claimed the life of a 50-year-old Athens man.

Authorities said Jeffery Ray Ayers died of his injuries on Thursday after being flown to an Augusta hospital’s burn center.

Police tell The Athens Banner-Herald (https://bit.ly/1mQDfXG) that it appears the man set fire to his home after dousing it with gasoline Wednesday night.

Jeff Scarbrough, chief of Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services, said Ayers fought with firefighters who struggled to get him out of the burning home.

Athens-Clarke County police Sgt. Jeff Clark said investigators knew of a possible motive, but that it was not going to be publicly released.

An autopsy on the man’s body is scheduled for Friday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation State Crime Lab in Decatur.
