MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Commission on Higher Education has denied Athens State University’s initial request to offer graduate degrees.

The commission voted 6-5 on Friday to reject the university’s request. The Decatur Daily reports (https://bit.ly/1kTTSoM ) that Athens State officials had requested the change because they want to offer master’s degrees in religion and logistics.

The change would have allowed the university to advertise itself as a school that offers graduate degree programs. The newspaper says the University of Alabama, the University of Alabama in Huntsville and Alabama A&M; University had opposed the request.

The commission did instruct Athens State officials to still submit the two graduate programs for approval to the commission.
