BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - The Whatcom County medical examiner says a man found dead Tuesday after a seven-hour police standoff in Bellingham was fatally injured by an accidental pipe bomb explosion.

The autopsy Friday showed that 37-year-old Oleg P. Panchenko suffered injuries to his right wrist and right thigh that were not immediately life threatening. But he refused help and died at least four hours after the blast.

There was no gunshot wound. A neighbor had called police after what she thought was a gunshot.

Panchenko refused to talk with police or come out after they fired tear gas, and sent in robots and a police dog. His body was found in a closet.

The medical examiner says other homemade explosive devices were found Panchenko’s apartment. He had a history of mental health issues.
