TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) - Cherokee citizens throughout Oklahoma can now buy a Cherokee Nation license plate.

Previously, only tribal citizens in the Cherokee Nations’ 14-county jurisdiction were eligible to buy tribal license plates. But in August, the state of Oklahoma signed a compact with the tribe to expand its motor vehicle tags statewide. It’s the first tribe in Oklahoma to do so.

Cherokee Nation citizens living in Mayes, Muskogee, Rogers, Tulsa and Wagoner counties can now purchase a Cherokee license plate at the same price as tribal members living in the Cherokee nation jurisdiction. Citizens in other counties in the state will receive a 10 percent discount rate compared to the cost of a state license plate.

Oklahoma receives a portion of the tag sales under the new compact.
