PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana prison is on lockdown following the fatal stabbing of an inmate.

The Indiana Department of Correction says 34-year-old Darwin Elmore was stabbed shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday at the Putnamville Correctional facility. Medics were called, and Elmore died about 11:30 p.m.

Prison officials and Indiana State Police are investigating Elmore’s death. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The suspect is being held in isolation at the prison about 40 miles southwest of Indianapolis. Officials say his name won’t be released unless he is formally charged by the Putnam County prosecutor’s office.

Elmore was serving two consecutive sentences for dealing in cocaine in Marion County.
