EDEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a western Michigan man has been killed after a large piece of a tree he was cutting struck him.

The Muskegon Chronicle and WPBN-WTOM report the 46-year-old Whitehall man died Friday afternoon in Mason County’s Eden Township. Officials haven’t released the name of the man, who died at the scene.

Sheriff’s officials say the man was cutting a 50-foot-tall tree that dropped, hit another tree and broke into several pieces. A five-foot chunk struck him in the head.

Sheriff Kim Cole says the tree was rotten in the middle.

The man worked for a tree service that was doing selective cutting for a private property owner.
