GRETNA, La. (AP) - The Jefferson Parish Council has given permission to the new all-female Krewe of Athena to roll in Metairie during the 2015 Mardi Gras season.

Athena spokeswoman Chelsie McCormick tells Nola.com/The Times-Picayune (https://bit.ly/1pPjP9m ) that the krewe hopes to roll on the season’s first Friday. Exact dates and times will be announced later.

President and krewe captain Taisha Williams-Payne, assistant principal at L.B. Landry-O. Perry Walker High School, says the krewe is making history. She says her research shows there has been no other krewe led predominantly by African-American women in Jefferson Parish.

She says Athena is in the process of applying for a parade permit. It’s also seeking members, who are limited to women age 21 and over. Dues are $550 per year.
