DERBY, Vt. (AP) - The new station commander at the Derby State Police Barracks in Vermont wants to hear from the community.

The Caledonian Record reports (https://bit.ly/TSbbfo) Lt. Walt Smith also wants to improve an advisory board for Essex and Orleans counties, in which citizen representatives from towns meet with local law enforcement officers to discuss the state of crime.

Smith said his focus will be on preventing and solving crimes. He said opiate addiction is driving a great deal of the crime in the area.
