NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a man has been charged with sexually assaulting a female patient at a New Jersey hospital.

The Asbury Park Press reports (https://on.app.com/1hTXuHT ) that Michael Holland allegedly assaulted the woman in her hospital room at The Jersey Shore University Medical Center on May 10. Neptune Police Lt. Michael McGhee says Holland is not a hospital employee.

A criminal complaint described the patient as “mentally defective,” a legal term for a person with a mental issue that makes them incapable of giving consent or understanding their conduct.

The 54-year-old Holland, with addresses in Neptune and Asbury Park, has been charged with aggravated sexual assault. A public defender representing him did not return messages seeking comment.

Holland is being held in the Monmouth County Jail on $200,000 bail.
