MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) - A police spokeswoman in Milwaukie, Oregon, says a man fatally shot by Milwaukie officers after a chase had rammed a police car before officers opened fire.

Officer Ulli Neitch says a Milwaukie officer determined after a Wednesday morning traffic stop that 38-year-old Travis Utley of Lebanon was sought on an arrest warrant. Police tried to take him into custody but he drove off.

When officers forced him to a stop after a brief chase into Portland, the spokeswoman says Utley drove toward the officers and rammed their car with his vehicle.

She says that’s when two Milwaukie officers fired, fatally wounding Utley.

They have been identified as Officer Billy Wells and Officer Zane Odem. Both are on leave while Portland police investigate the shooting. Neither was injured.

Neitch says she doesn’t know what Utley’s arrest warrant was for.
