ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - A Shiprock man will serve time in a federal prison for throwing a knife and stabbing a tribal police officer in the foot.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Mexico says 45-year-old Victor Tyler was sentenced Thursday afternoon in Albuquerque to four-and-a-half years for an assault conviction.

Tyler pleaded guilty in November to assault with a dangerous weapon.

Prosecutors say two Navajo Nation police officers responded to a call about a domestic dispute at a Shiprock home in August 2013.

They say Tyler refused officers’ instructions to drop two kitchen knives and then threw one.

It struck an officer, leading one of them to shoot and wound Tyler.
