INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman has jumped into the race to become U.S. House majority whip.

The northeastern Indiana Republican first elected in 2010 is a tea party favorite and one of the more conservative Republicans of the U.S. House. His entry Thursday came amid the shake-up in congressional leadership following House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s surprise primary defeat on Tuesday.

Cantor’s defeat has led House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California to launch a bid for majority leader. Stutzman is running against Rep. Peter Roskam of Illinois and Rep. Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES’) of Louisiana for the position McCarthy is vacating.

Votes for majority leader and majority whip are set for Thursday.
