WELCH, W.Va. (AP) - McDowell County Sheriff Martin West says a Russian coal company has agreed to pay $800,000 in back taxes to the county.

West says Mechel Bluestone Coal Corp. submitted a payment in that sum as a result of a lawsuit his office filed against the company. It owes more than $1 million.

West told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph (https://bit.ly/TRyMwQ) the tax payment will help make up a budget shortfall for the County Commission and the county Board of Education for the fiscal year beginning July 1. Eight county employees were laid off last month as a result of the budget shortfall.

Moscow-based Mechel operates mines and power plants and produces steel.

West said a default order was entered on June 9 by a McDowell County Circuit Court judge.
