CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (AP) - A federal judge has appointed a receiver to assume control of the finances for a troubled detention facility in Central Falls.

A Rhode Island Superior Court judge approved a petition Friday from the Central Falls Detention Facility Corporation, the quasi-public private corporation that operates the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility. The court named Jonathan N. Savage as temporary receiver.

The detention facility for federal prisoners housed detainees for Immigration and Customs Enforcement until 2008, when the agency stopped using Wyatt because one of its detainees died of cancer after allegedly being neglected and abused by prison staff. Since then, it has been unable to fill its cells.

According to the corporation, Wyatt’s outstanding bond debt was $97.3 million as of January. Wyatt is publicly owned.
