GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Police say an armed 61-year-old man was shot and killed Friday night in an exchange of gunfire with Gulfport officers.

Police Sgt. Damon McDaniel says Gulfport officers responded to a “shots fired” call at 10:13 p.m. Friday and engaged a man in the residence driveway.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigations spokesman Warren Strain said says the mas has been identified as Frank Rhodes. Strain says Rhodes fired on the officers and was killed during the exchange.

Harrison County Coroner Gary Hargrove says Rhodes died from a gunshot to the head.

Other details of the incident have not yet been released.

MBI is assisting in the investigation.
