CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Police say a 20-year-old Georgia man has drowned and his friend has been pulled from the waters off the Gulf of Mexico.

Clearwater Police Officer Christian Zarra was patrolling the area Friday night when someone alerted him to a swimmer in distress. Zarra ran pulled 41-year-old Donald Duncan to safety. A cardiologist was on the beach at the time and helped treat Duncan. He was taken to the hospital, but his condition was not known.

Duncan told the officer his friend Ryan Terry was also struggling in the rough waters. Coast Guard and fire rescue officials found Terry’s body a short time later.

Police said Duncan and Terry worked together in Georgia and were vacationing in Florida with several others. They had been staying at an Orlando hotel.
