BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The boyfriend of a Winooski woman charged with killing her 14-month-old son has admitted lying to a police officer investigating the baby’s death.

Tyler Chicoine, 25, pleaded guilty on Friday as part of a plea deal.

Chicoine was the boyfriend of Nytosha LaForce, who has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Peighton Geraw on April 4.

Chicoine has been jailed on a furlough violation since shortly after the baby’s death.

Chittenden County State’s Attorney T.J. Donovan said Chicoine is the primary witness in the case and his testimony is crucial to the state’s case.

“Because of that, we entered into the plea agreement today, essentially giving Mr. Chicoine a probated sentence on a misdemeanor charge,” he said Friday.

Chicoine is required to be “fully cooperate” with the state’s prosecution of LaForce as part of the deal, the Burlington Free Press reported (https://bfpne.ws/1jqxpeq ).

Peighton was found dead less than an hour after a Department of Children and Families worker had visited her apartment, police said.

Police arrested Laforce after she and Chicoine consented to polygraph tests, police said. Chicoine said during a follow-up interview that he witnessed Laforce shake Peighton and bang his head on the floor, police said. He said he had been withholding the information because he loved her, police said.
