DES ALLEMANDS, La. (AP) - The Des Allemands community will turn out June 20-22 for the annual Catfish Festival on the grounds of St. Gertrude Catholic Church.

There will be typical fair attractions, including rides and food booths.

Highlights also will include a catfish-skinning exhibition on June 22.

Over the three days of the festival, entertainers will include Ryan Foret and the Foret Tradition, Shot Time, Ruff-n- Ready, Na Na Sha, the Molly Ringwalds, Amanda Shaw and Louisiana Spice and the Bucktown Allstars.

The Rev. William McCallion founded the festival in the 1970s. In 1975, Gov. Edwin Edwards signed a proclamation declaring Des Allemands the catfish capital of the world, and in 1980, the Legislature passed a resolution naming it the catfish capital of the universe.
