MARION, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 64-year-old Florence man was killed when his plane crashed in Marion County.

Coroner Jerry Richardson says John Milton Sherbert was killed instantly Friday when his two-third scale P-51 Mustang aircraft crashed in a cornfield.

The crash happened about a mile away from the Marion County Airport. Officials say the single-engine, single-occupant plane was only in the air for about 15 minutes before it crashed.

Registration documents note the amateur built, experimental plane was constructed in 1980.

Officials with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash. An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.
