JENNINGS, La. (AP) - The Jefferson Davis Parish Police Jury is expected to call a Dec. 6 election to renew a tax tied to upkeep of the parish courthouse and jail.

The American Press reported (https://bit.ly/1eOXZNb) the Police Jury meets on July 23 and also is expected to call for separate millages for roads in the Fenton area and fire protection facilities in the Elton area.

Jurors this past week gave formal notice that they will call for renewal of a 10-year, 2.61-mill property tax for the jail and courthouse. The tax generates more than $500,000 annually, officials said.

“This is very important to us because we have to maintain the parish courthouse and we will still need the (old) jail facility for when we bring prisoners in for trial,” Police Jury President Donald Woods said.

Plans are also underway to renovate the old Police Jury meeting room on the second floor of the courthouse in Jennings to provide space for a second, smaller courtroom.

Voters approved a separate half-cent sales tax last month to pay for maintenance and operation of the parish’s new 200-bed jail.

Police jurors also are expected to ask voters in the Fenton area to renew a 10-year, 10.32 mill property tax for maintenance and improvements of roads and bridges in Sub Road District 1 of Road District 11. The tax generates almost $225,000 each year.

A separate proposition seeking continuance of a 10-year, 5.53 mill property tax for maintenance and operations of FIre Protection District 6 in Elton is expected to be called by the Police Jury in August.

Revenue from the tax - about $55,000 each year - would be used for construction, improvement and maintenance in the district.
