RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - The Ozark-St. Francis National Forests has opened a new shooting range in Newton County.

Newton County Sheriff Keith Slape says having the range allows his deputies to maintain their law enforcement standards without having to drive long distances to other areas.

Slape also says the range will be a drawing point for the Newton County area as other law enforcement agencies use it for training.

The Shelton Point Shooting Range has a shed, five shooting stations, covered benches and backstops at 25, 50 and 100-yard ranges for visitors looking for a safe place to practice pistol and rifle shooting. The range also features a wheel-chair accessible area with a bench, concrete sidewalks and special parking.

The range was developed by the sheriff’s office and the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission.
