SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Police in Syracuse say officers subdued a man with a loaded handgun just as mourners were leaving a gang member’s funeral.

Sgt. Tom Connellan says officers were monitoring Friday’s funeral for Bryan Sheppard to prevent further gang violence.

Sheppard was stabbed in the heart on June 7. The Post-Standard reports (https://bit.ly/1qLxQVG ) that the 29-year-old Sheppard was an admitted gang member.

Thirty-one-year-old Jerry Benton Jr. has been charged with second-degree murder in the stabbing. His family has said he is innocent.

Police say 23-year-old Ricky Jamison was tackled directly in front of the Peoples AME Zion Church just as Sheppard’s funeral was ending.

Jamison was arrested on charges of criminal possession of a weapon and obstructing government administration.

It was not clear if Jamison had a lawyer.
