PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Brown University graduate has won the Miss Rhode Island crown and will compete in the Miss America pageant in September.

Twenty-three-year-old Miss Providence Ivy DePew was crowned Miss Rhode Island on Saturday night after beating 15 other women competing for the title. She succeeds Miss Rhode Island 2013 Jessica Marfeo of Exeter.

The first runner-up in this year’s pageant was Miss East Greenwich Alexandra Curtis.

DePew graduated from Brown with a master’s degree in public affairs last month. She earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Memphis in 2012. She is a native of Memphis.

The new Miss Rhode Island is expected to promote community service while also serving as an ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network during her year of service.
