LINDENHURST, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a 10-year-old boy is gravely injured after being hit by a car while crossing a Long Island road.

The Suffolk County Police department said John Johnson was hospitalized in critical condition with a head injury Sunday after the crash Saturday night. It happened around 8:30 p.m. in Lindenhurst, where he lives.

Police say John and his mother were crossing Montauk Highway at South 13th Street when a westbound car hit him. Police are investigating the details.

The 21-year-old driver and his passenger weren’t injured. Police are safety-checking the car, but no one has been charged with any crime.
