NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) - Natchez officials now say the city does not have a $1.5 million deficit, after all.

Mayor Butch Brown tells The Natchez Democrat (https://bit.ly/1pY7Bvt) he thinks the city may even have a surplus once the books are straightened out.

Last week, aldermen were told that lower than expected ad valorem tax revenue and increased payroll expenses had caused a deficit.

Brown says the city’s independent auditor later found that the water works department had not reported any revenues - but had reported its spending. That showed up June 10 as a $1.5 million deficit.

Brown says the auditor corrected the data this past week.

Brown says the city is reviewing other accounts where there may be errors.
