LEVITTOWN, N.Y. (AP) - Police and her family say a driver has plowed into a developmentally disabled teenage girl and killed her while she crossed a Long Island road to visit a relative. They’re searching for the motorist.

The Nassau County Police Department says 13-year-old Bryanna Soplin was hit while crossing Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown just after midnight Saturday. She died at a hospital.

Her father, Julio Soplin, tells Newsday his daughter was going to visit her grandfather.

The father says Bryanna had Down syndrome. He says she was a happy girl who enjoyed karate.

Police say the driver didn’t stop, headed east on Hempstead Turnpike, then turned north onto the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway. The vehicle is described as a late-model, blue Town and Country minivan.

Police ask anyone with information to call 1-800-244-TIPS.
