PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence police say the beating of a convicted sex offender last month has turned into a potential homicide after the victim died recently.

Sixty-nine-year-old Milton Lyles was found beaten on the 300 block of Broad Street on May 19. Police told The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1lwXSLF ) that Lyles died at Rhode Island Hospital on Thursday.

Lyles lived near the crime scene. Police and court records show he was a registered sex offender with criminal records in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Police are searching for several men who were involved in the attack. Authorities say the motive isn’t clear, but it appeared Lyles was an innocent bystander.
