HOUSTON (AP) - Texas authorities say 15 people fled a stolen pickup truck after it crashed into a rice field ditch while being pursued by police.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office says an off-duty officer with the Department of Public Safety saw people lying in the bed of the truck on Saturday. The officer trailed the vehicle after determining it was stolen.

The Houston Chronicle reports (https://bit.ly/1kW5Luc ) the pickup crashed through a country gate near a rice field in the Houston suburb of Katy and into a ditch. The car’s 15 occupants fled.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Christina Garza says officers from several agencies used horses, K-9 units and a helicopter to search the field. She says eight occupants have been detained. Officers are looking for seven others to ensure no one was injured.
