PHIL CAMPBELL, Ala. (AP) - Divers were searching for a swimmer who went missing after jumping from a rock overlooking Bates Landing at the Bear Creek Reservoir.

The TimesDaily reports (https://bit.ly/SNjjN1) that a Franklin County dive team was searching for the 18-year-old man Sunday evening.

Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver said the man and some family members were jumping from the rock when the man jumped in and never resurfaced Sunday afternoon.

Bates Landing is about three to four miles south of Phil Campbell, almost at the Marion County line.

Oliver said the area is a popular spot where swimmers enjoy jumping from rocks into the water. The water is about 38 to 40 feet deep and the rocks are about 15 to 20 feet above the surface.
