IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - Relatives say an Iowa City man who drowned over the weekend at Coralville Lake was a fun-loving man dedicated to his family and young son.

The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports (https://icp-c.com/1nKSfcF ) the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that 36-year-old Somphaeng Syvixay drowned Saturday while swimming in Coralville Lake.

His cousin, Connie Phommaly, says he was an outgoing, happy man who was “big on family.”

He attended school in West Liberty and then finished high school in San Diego. He returned to Iowa City six years ago to take a job and get married.

He had a 2-year-old son.

Emergency responders were called to the lake about 5 p.m. Saturday after reports that a man went under the water near Scales Pointe Campground. Authorities recovered Syvixay’s body just before 9 p.m.
