ATLANTA (AP) - Federal prosecutors say two former Spalding County Fire Department officials are accused of warning drug dealers about upcoming police investigations.

Officials said 47-year-old Dwayne Tyrone Coggins and 37-year-old Michael Owens of Griffin have been indicted by a federal grand jury and appeared in court for an arraignment Monday.

U.S. Attorney Sally Yates says Coggins had served as a battalion chief and Owens was a firefighter. Officials say police regularly gathered at the fire department in Griffin before serving warrants. Authorities say investigators learned that Coggins and Owens had been warning drug dealers ahead of time about investigations between April and May and are charged with tipping them off.

Prosecutors say the Federal Bureau of Investigation is also probing the case.

It’s unclear if Coggins and Owens have attorneys.
