WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - Five days of events are planned to celebrate Juneteenth in Waterloo, beginning with prayer services on Wednesday.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1nKLis5 ) a noon unity prayer at the county courthouse will begin the events. Other plans include a basketball tournament, peace march, health fair and gospel performance.

Juneteenth marks the day on June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Texas and announced the end of slavery.

Event organizer LaTanya Graves says the number of events and participants have varied during the 18 years she’s been involved in the Waterloo celebration.

She says a high point is always the NAACP Peace March, which features the Crusaders Drill Team.
