EDEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities have released the name of western Michigan man who was killed when a large piece of a tree he was cutting struck him.

The Ludington Daily News and The Muskegon Chronicle report Monday that the Mason County sheriff’s department identifies the man killed Friday as John L. Short of Whitehall.

The department says that Short was working for a tree service company when a 50-foot-tall tree he was cutting dropped, hit another tree and broke into several pieces. Sheriff Kim Cole says a five-foot chunk struck Short in the head.

The accident happened in a wooded area of Eden Township, about 15 miles east-southeast of Ludington.
