CARTERET, N.J. (AP) - Authorities are praising an off-duty police dispatcher who rescued two neighbors from a fire that destroyed their home.

Five people managed to flee the home on Capp Street in Carteret early Monday.

WNBC-TV in New York (https://bit.ly/1owwD7v ) reports the dispatcher broke a window and helped pull two residents out before firefighters arrived. They were taken to a hospital with cuts they received climbing out of the window.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
