CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - Xcel Energy will open its new facility in eastern New Mexico next month.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports (https://bit.ly/1i19iYX) the electricity provider will hold a ceremony July 8 to launch a 24,000-square-foot facility.

The property is located inside a Carlsbad industrial park and is estimated to have cost $4.8 million.

The company will employ 37 people full-time as well as additional contractors.

Xcel previously occupied a 50-year-old building that was little more than half the size of the new one.

Demand for electricity in the region is expected to grow significantly because of booms in the oilfields and mining industry.

Xcel has plans for 240 miles of new distribution lines that will carry electricity straight to customers in Lea and Eddy counties.
