MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - A West Virginia University alumnus and his wife have donated $3 million to his alma mater.

The giving is from John and Mary Anne Hardesty. John Hardesty is a long-time resident of Preston County with business and family ties in the Kingwood area.

The donation will establish endowed scholarships for students attending W.Va. from Preston County as well as student-athletes in the university’s basketball program.

The Hardesty giving involves several donations, including naming the WVU Foundation as a beneficiary of part of a paid life insurance policy. Another element involves $1 million to a scholarship fund established several years ago in memory of their son, Johnny Hardesty.

President Gordon Gee says the donation will help Preston County young people achieve their dreams.
