BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Police say an elderly woman was critically injured in a shooting at a retirement home in Birmingham, and the suspect fatally shot himself.

Lt. Sean Edwards says a woman was taken to the University of Alabama at Birmingham hospital after a shooting Monday afternoon at the McMillon Estates retirement community.

Edwards says the woman was shot in her shoulder and is suffering life-threatening injuries.

Edwards says an elderly male suspect who was barricaded in a room after the shooting was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound about three hours after the woman was shot.

Details on the victim’s age and the circumstances that led to the shooting weren’t immediately available.
