ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey man has pleaded guilty to felony murder in the death of 92-year-old woman who was killed during a robbery at her home two years ago.

Union County prosecutors say 40-year-old Daniel Rios of Elizabeth entered his plea Monday. He faces a 30-year prison term, with no chance for parole, when he’s sentenced July 11.

Rios was charged in the May 2012 death of Annette Hempel.

Prosecutors say he rang the doorbell of the first-floor apartment where Hemple lived by herself and pushed his way into her residence.

When Hempel started screaming, Rios put his hand over her mouth and brought her to the ground in an effort to silence her, leading to her death by asphyxiation. He then stole approximately $360 in change before fleeing.
