CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard has seized a Mexican fishing boat and detained its five crewmembers in a poaching investigation off the Gulf Coast waters of South Texas.

Coast Guard officials say an agency jet spotted the 25-foot fishing boat 30 miles offshore and 70 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border on Sunday.

A Coast Guard vessel from South Padre Island intercepted the boat after it tried to flee south toward Mexican waters. Officials found 450 dead red snapper on the fishing boat. Officials say the Mexican fishing crew was illegally catching fish without a permit.

The four-person crew was turned over to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials for return to Mexico. The fishing boat was towed back to the Coast Guard’s station at South Padre Island.
