ESCATAWPA, Miss. (AP) - An Alabama man was killed Wednesday in a shootout with a co-worker in Jackson County.
County Coroner Vicki Broadus tells The Sun Herald (https://bit.ly/1pleW72) Christopher Columbus Knight, 49, of Grand Bay, Alabama, died of gunshot wounds.
Sheriff Charles Britt said Knight and Lanis L. Chapman, 47, of Citronelle, got into an altercation at their jobs that spilled over into the streets when the two shot at each other on Roberts Road in the Escatawpa community.
Britt said Chapman also was shot and taken to Singing River Hospital for treatment. He was in stable condition after the shooting.
Britt is not saying where the two men worked.
Deputies received the report of the shooting at 6:39 p.m. Wednesday and were on the scene within three minutes.
Knight was found dead in his car, but the car had rolled forward after he was shot, hitting a power pole and snapping it in half.
Britt said the broken half of the power pole landed on his car and had to be removed by the power company before officials could remove Knight.
Chapman was found wounded in the middle of the road near the passenger side of his own vehicle.
