SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A former West Valley City police detective charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed woman will be in court next month.

Court records show 33-year-old Shaun Cowley will make an initial appearance on July 7 in state court.

District Attorney Sim Gill announced Thursday morning that his office was charging Cowley for fatally shooting 21-year-old Danielle Willard in November 2012.

Gill said Cowley’s life was not threatened and had previously ruled the shooting unjustified.

Cowley’s attorney Lindsay Jarvis says her client maintains his innocence.

West Valley City Police Chief Lee Russo says Cowley was fired in September for unrelated behavior that undermined investigations.

Cowley is appealing that firing.
