PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) - A Pensacola man has been sentenced to life in prison for raping and murdering a woman.

An Escambia County judge sentenced 26-year-old Joshua Wayne Douglas on Thursday. He was convicted in April of first-degree murder. Jurors recommended the death penalty, but Circuit Judge Terry Terrell chose the lesser sentence.

Authorities say 25-year-old Jamie Broxson was sexually assaulted, suffocated and left in the woods near a Gulf Power Co. substation in 2010. Investigators initially identified Douglas as a suspect through traces of DNA left on Broxson’s body.

The Pensacola News-Journal (https://goo.gl/uYxQpd ) reports that Broxson’s DNA was also found inside Douglas’ truck and home.
