BERNALILLO, N.M. (AP) - Navajo tribal police have captured a couple wanted for opening fire on a Sandoval County deputy.

The Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office says Navajo police took 31-year-old Richmond Sam and 26-year-old Angela Yazzie into custody Friday afternoon.

Sheriff’s spokesman Keith Elder says Deputy Robert Strand was pursuing their vehicle around 2 a.m. for suspected drunk driving when one of them fired between six and eight shots at him.

According to Strand, one bullet hit his vehicle but there were no injuries.

The two suspects drove onto the Navajo Nation and turned off their vehicle’s lights to elude capture.

Investigators say the suspects called the FBI during the pursuit and provided identifying information.

Navajo police located them near Chaco Canyon. Officials say the couple are also persons of interest in a homicide on the Navajo Nation.
