SOUTH BELOIT, Ill. (AP) - City officials in South Beloit say Mayor Mike Duffy has died.

Duffy was elected in 2011 after more than 40 years in education, including 15 years as superintendent of the South Beloit School District. He was 68.

The Rockford Register Star reported Friday that (https://bit.ly/1lGczgU ) Duffy oversaw ongoing development of the downtown corridor and creation of the city’s first comprehensive land us plan.

City officials released a statement praising Duffy’s “lifetime commitment to public service” and say he served the city “with great distinction.”

Duffy also worked for the past few years as interim superintendent at the Durand School District.

He is survived by his wife, Lori, and five children.
