SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Police in Vermont say a man and woman were both charged with drunken driving after the man fled a traffic stop on foot and the woman drove off.

South Burlington Police pulled over a car driven by 43-year-old Shane Bessette of Lowell about 11:30 Friday night. They say he stopped and immediately ran off. He was quickly caught and charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest and driving with a suspended license.

When the officer gave chase, 32-year-old Michelle Simpson of Lowell got into the driver’s seat and fled. She was later charged with driving under the influence and disorderly conduct.

It could not immediately be learned if either had a lawyer. A phone number for Bessette was out of service. A number for Simpson could not be found.
